A Few Words About Us
Our Vision
Our vision is a world where civic storytelling is elevated to its rightful place as a cornerstone of democracy, where media practitioners are equipped with the skills, resources, and support they need to amplify the voices of communities and hold power to account. We envision a society where priority areas such as health and nutrition, open governance, peace-building, climate change, and the well-being of women and children are given the visibility and attention they deserve through responsible and impactful journalism.
Our Mission
At Akuko Foundation, our mission is threefold:
Empowerment Through Capacity Building: We are committed to building an ecosystem of young storytellers who are equipped with the skills and knowledge to report on citizen-centered civic issues using verifiable data. Through our comprehensive training programs, mentorship opportunities, and resources, we empower media practitioners to become catalysts for change in their communities.
Advocacy for Robust Reporting: We advocate for a media landscape where robust research and responsible reporting take precedence over sensationalism and misinformation. By stimulating a community of media practitioners who prioritize rigorous research and lend their voice to prevalent civic issues, we strive to elevate the quality and impact of journalism worldwide.
Facilitation of Collaboration and Partnership: We believe in the power of collaboration and partnership to drive meaningful change. Through our initiatives, we foster partnerships amongst media practitioners across all sectors, facilitate knowledge sharing, and create opportunities for collective action in addressing critical civic issues.
Our Focus Areas
Akuko Foundation focuses its efforts on five thematic areas:
Health and Nutrition:
In our efforts to promote health and nutrition, we recognize the fundamental importance of access to quality healthcare and nutrition security for all individuals. Through our initiatives, we aim to raise awareness about health disparities, advocate for policies that improve healthcare access and affordability, and empower communities to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. We support media practitioners in reporting on health-related issues, from healthcare infrastructure and disease outbreaks to nutrition education and food security.
Open Governance (Democracy):
Open governance lies at the heart of democracy, embodying principles of transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in decision-making processes. At Akuko Foundation, we advocate for open governance practices that empower citizens to hold their governments accountable and participate actively in democratic processes. Through our initiatives, we support media practitioners in investigating and reporting on issues such as government transparency, corruption, electoral integrity, and civic engagement.
Peace Building:
Peace is a prerequisite for societal progress and human flourishing. In regions affected by conflict and instability, peace-building efforts are crucial for fostering dialogue, reconciliation, and sustainable peace. Akuko Foundation is committed to supporting peace-building initiatives that promote understanding, tolerance, and cooperation among diverse communities. We provide media practitioners with resources and training to report on peace-building efforts, highlight stories of resilience and reconciliation, and amplify the voices of peace advocates and affected communities.
Climate Change:
Climate change poses one of the most pressing challenges of our time, with far-reaching implications for the environment, economy, and society. At Akuko Foundation, we recognize the urgency of addressing climate change through collective action and informed decision-making. Through our initiatives, we support media practitioners in reporting on climate-related issues, from the impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities to solutions for mitigation and adaptation. We advocate for policies that promote sustainable environmental practices and empower communities to take action against climate change.
Women and Children:
Protecting and advancing the rights and well-being of women and children is essential for building a more equitable and just society. Akuko Foundation is dedicated to addressing the unique challenges faced by women and children, particularly those in marginalized communities. Through our initiatives, we support media practitioners in reporting on issues such as gender-based violence, maternal and child health, education access, and economic empowerment. We advocate for policies that promote gender equality and invest in the health, education, and protection of women and children.
Through our work in these thematic areas, Akuko Foundation aims to catalyze positive change, amplify marginalized voices, and build a more inclusive and sustainable future for all.
